Our Friday Feature this week is the wonderful Becks from The Interior Lens. With a passion for creating spaces that are practical and beautiful, and an incredible eye for colour (bringing personality, style, and warmth into homes without making them feel over the top), Becks is a well respected interior designer and content creator. Her gorgeous designs have featured in numerous home magazines, and she regularly shares inspiring spaces and creative ideas on her Instagram (to over 180k followers, we should add!).

Let’s get to know more about her and her business…

Do you feel being creative is a part of your identity?

Yes, it’s a huge part of my identity. Whether it’s decorating a room, crafting, flower arranging or baking, I just love bringing ideas to life in a visual manner. It helps me to relax and brings me a real sense of joy.

What first got you interested in interior design?

I have been interested in interior design my whole life. I used to rearrange my bedroom all the time as a child. I used to cut out images of rooms I liked in magazines and wander around the neighbourhood picking out my dream house!

How did your small business start?

We bought a house in 2016 that needed a full renovation and it really unleashed my love of design. I set up an Instagram account and began to document the changes and, to my surprise, total strangers (as opposed to just my friends and family) started to follow my account. During lock down I was furloughed from my job as a Research Director and spent the evenings studying a diploma in Interior Design to explore my interest and develop my skills further, which was a welcome break from home schooling my children! I started undertaking some projects for friends and family but then as my Instagram following continued to grow, I took the step of offering my services more widely. I’m 2.5 years into working as a designer and content creator full time and haven’t looked back!

What does your average working week look like?

My weeks are very busy and I am constantly juggling. I don’t have any childcare for my kids so I’m extremely busy working on content creation and interior design consultations between 9-3pm before I switch to mum mode. I then often work late into the evening. Instagram and content creation takes up a lot more of my time than people may imagine. It involves liaising with brands over email, responding to new enquiries, creating content (which may include decorating a room!), editing and posting content and then spending time engaging with my audience’s comments and questions. I love it but it certainly doesn’t fit into 9-5pm! I tend to conduct 2- 3 interior consultations a week, which are a mix of online and face to face sessions. After meeting my clients and discussing their needs, I create room schemes for them and provide a summary of recommendations. My brain is constantly whirring with ideas!

What has been your favourite milestone or highlight in your business so far?

There isn’t a single moment that stands out for me. Overall, I just feel incredibly proud and fortunate to do a job that I feel so passionate about. It was extremely scary to leave a stable, well paid career after 20 years to pursue my love of design. It was tough starting from scratch for so many different reasons but I’m so proud I took the step and I never ever wake up dreading the day ahead.

What’s a common misconception about interior design?

I think there’s a lack of appreciation for just how long it can take to develop fresh and cohesive interior designs. It can take a considerable amount of time to source every component to complete an overall look and it’s very hard for that to be recognised when people are faced with a moodboard, or walk into a room, and process it in just a few seconds!

In those moments when business feels hard, what keeps you going?

I feel fortunate that I have 2 work streams – interior design and content creation. It means I’m constantly being challenged in different ways and have a lot of variety in terms of who I’m working with and what I’m working on. I love the variety and there’s frequent change which means difficult times come and go quickly!

What inspires your creativity?

I am inspired by new surroundings – whether that’s travelling abroad to visit a city I’ve never been to before, visiting a gallery or museum, or just taking my dog for a walk somewhere different. I am easily bored and crave fresh stimulation so I am constantly out and about and that’s often a catalyst for new ideas! I am a real people person and find spending time with other creative people energises me and often sparks ideas too.

Lockdown was hard for many reasons, but it’s amazing how it gave so many creative woman the time, space, and push, to follow their passions and start something incredible. And aren’t Becks’s interior designs beautiful?
