This week’s Friday Feature is the lovely Abi from Crafty Tinks. With a fine art painting degree in her back pocket, after a little detour into childcare Abi was encouraged back to her love of art and creativity by her now-husband. She now has a large collection of cards and prints and also loves creating bespoke pieces with meaning.

Let’s get to know more about the woman behind the small business…

Do you feel being creative is part of your identity?

Yes, I’d say so, I love what I do and love that I can express myself through my work. I’m quite a quiet person so I guess I get to speak to people through my art without having an actual audience right in front of me.

Has creativity ever helped you through a difficult time in your life?

Creating my COURAGE Painting for breast cancer awareness which is a cause very close to my heart helped me find a way to help a great cause with something I love to do. Also, during Covid I tried to still create joyful pieces of art to share to my social media pages which hopefully brightened someone’s day who might have needed it that day. Covid didn’t directly affect me but I knew people who it did so my aim was to bring some hope and joy their way during a difficult time.

What do you love most about creating art and illustrations?

That I get to capture special moments in time for my customers to keep forever. Each piece gives me a sense of pride, even when my greeting cards sell on my website or in one of the shops they are stocked in, it fills me with joy every time.

Why did you decide to start your own small business?

That one is down to my husband; he encouraged me to get back into my art.

After studying fine art painting for three years at uni and a year of art foundation before that at college, I knew I didn’t want to be an art teacher even though I loved child development and health and social care at school. Not knowing what I wanted to do I went back to childcare and became a nursery nurse. Soon after I met my now-husband and he encouraged me to create Crafty Tinks over 8 years ago now, alongside my job, which eventually started to pick up over time and allow me to do it full time.

What has been the biggest challenge in your small business?

Trying to get my work further afield and more interaction on my website and social media as these all help towards my sales.

Do you enjoy being creative outside of your business?

Yes, I love interiors and doing up houses, we’re currently on our second house renovation and I also created a wall mural on my little girl’s nursery wall which I’d love to do more of.

What creative project, hobby, or idea do you dream of trying one day?

I’d love to create wrapping paper, homeware and illustrate children’s books.

Where do you hope your business will be in three years’ time?

Stocked in more shops worldwide, possibly have a shop of my own selling my products which also has a studio attached to it where people could also see me creating my products.

How do you handle creative blocks?

I’ll try to do more research about what’s going on in the world and what’s trending to give me more ideas on what to create.

What does the phrase ‘work-life balance’ mean to you?

Doing what I love, being able to paint and create from anywhere anytime allowing me to spend quality time with my family and friends.

You can really feel Abi’s joy for creating – especially with pieces that mean something to her customers. Thank goodness her husband encouraged her to pursue painting again… we need more small businesses by wonderful creative women like Abi!
