Our Friday Feature this week is the exceptionally talented Krishanthi Armitt. After fifteen years of making exquisite artisan cakes and sugar flowers, Krishanthi now focuses solely on creating beautiful floral creations from different mediums.

Let’s get to know more about her…

What does being creative mean to you?

Being creative means coming up with some original and unique ideas to explore and elaborate. It’s a form of personal expression through art. Creativity simply means having a blank canvas to transform my ideas into reality, whether it be an experiment of fusing different ideas together or working with a specific  medium.

In other words freedom to play

Have you always been creative?

I come from a creative family, from my grandma to my mother to my sisters.  We all have our unique creative talents, ranging from painting, carpentry, playing musical instruments, to cooking and baking.  Initially, I didn’t follow a creative path as I was (and still am) interested in politics and sociology.  I studied sociology in Germany and England, before venturing into investment banking for a few years. It was only after having my first child I took the leap to go down a creative path.

What has been your favourite milestone or highlight in your business so far?

I think the highlight of my career has to be appearing on Kirstie’s Handmade Christmas and having my work featured in Martha Stewart.

What’s the hardest part of running your own small business?

It definitely has to be the isolation of working on my own and not being able to bounce off ideas with likeminded people.

How has your small business evolved over time?

I started off as an artisan cake designer and ran my business for 15 years before moving on to making flowers only. Now, I create floral art using different mediums and absolutely love what I do.

What’s a common misconception about cakes, sugar flowers, or paper flowers?

People don’t generally give much thought into the creative process of making flowers or cakes. Most people believe that flowers can be created quickly (as if I would go to my garden and cut some flowers to decorate).

Is there a creative project, hobby, or idea you have tried that just didn’t suit you?

I thought about running a bakery for a long time, but decided against it last minute. Not only was there the financial investment, but also the time and energy I would have needed to invest would have been enormous.

What creative project, hobby, or idea do you dream of trying one day?

I would love to learn how to make pottery as well as work with porcelain.

How do you get into a creative mindset?

Some days creativity just flows and on other days I can really have a creative block. I work best if I have my favourite music playing in the background and do not get interrupted. When I am feeling nervous about a project, then I usually go for a long walk in Richmond Park (Isabella Plantation is my favourite) to absorb the nature’s energy to calm myself down. When I am calm then creativity comes to me easily.

Are there any challenges you’ve faced as a creative woman, in life or business?

Yes, most certainly. There’s a lot of competition and, unfortunately, some people feel threatened by other creatives’ success stories. Then there are others who feel that they can simply copy your designs and not give credit to the original artist. There are then other challenges like failing in my experimentation process. Some days I dream of a certain flower I wish to make with a specific medium, but this doesn’t turn out as I envisaged. I don’t let failures put me off from trying harder.

We told you Krishanthi is talented, didn’t we. Can you believe each of those flowers is handcrafted from paper, sugar, or another medium? Aren’t they stunning?
