Monthly Motivation – 5 ideas for a creative September

5 ideas for a creative September illustrations

Whether you go with the meteorological start of autumn being the 1st of September or the astronomical idea of autumn beginning with the equinox later in the month, September marks a change in season. Summer days are starting to dwindle, colours are beginning to rust, and scents, flavours, and textures are all starting to get that slightly cosy feel. And don’t even get us going on how it’s the start of the best season on TV!

If you fancy getting creative (perhaps snuggled on the sofa, watching something comforting, as the nights begin to draw in), here are our 5 ideas for a creative September…

5 ideas for a creative September

1. Press some late-summer flowers. If you’re not quite ready to let go of summer yet, and want to preserve a little piece of it to warm you up when the days get colder – why not press some late-summer flowers to make you smile in months to come? Cosmos, hydrangea petals, daisies… collect any flowers you can still find, then use them to decorate bookmarks, greeting cards, or artwork. If you don’t have a proper flower press, just use some heavy books instead.

2. Make blackberry jam. Does anything say September more than blackberries? They’re abundant right now! Grab yourself a punnet from the shops or if you’ve got somewhere local to go foraging yourself, even better. Once your jam is made, don’t forget to get creative with your jars too. Jam not your thing? Make a blackberry crumble instead!

3. Decorate some box files. We’ve all heard of a good spring clean but does anyone else love an autumn sort out? With the excitement (or perhaps, the chaos) of summer coming to an end, and that ‘back to school’ feeling – September is a great time of year to clear out any clutter you no longer need and get organised for the last third of the year. But tidying things up doesn’t have to be dull… find creative storage options to make things neat AND pretty or fun. A great place to start is by decorating some box files for all your important letters and life admin.

4. Create a fabric pouch. It doesn’t matter if you’re five or forty, nothing beats new stationery for September. From notebooks to pencil sharpeners, there’s something so motivating about new things for a new ‘term’. But, that feeling doesn’t have to be exclusive to school or office goers. Forget using last year’s pencil case, carrying paintbrushes in an old paper bag, or getting muddled with numerous stitching projects in one box – create your own fabric pouch (or two) to get that new-stationery feeling for all your creative bits and pieces. Not great a sewing? Pick up a ready-made pouch and have fun decorating it instead.

5. Paint a set of coasters. Get hug-a-mug weather ready by painting a set of coasters. Use wood slices, cork, or ceramic tiles, and decorate them with abstract brushstrokes, detailed patterns, or simple flowers. Acrylic paints work best (or ceramic paint for tiles), and make sure to protect your finished coasters from heat before use with the right sealant or method for your chosen materials.

We hope our 5 ideas for a creative September help you embrace the transition from summer to autumn with joy and comforting excitement. Creativity is a great tool for your wellbeing, and as the days start to get more noticeably shorter, focusing on a creative project can really help your mindset.
