We’re definitely into the ‘ber’ months now and autumn is autumn-ing more and more each week. Time to get cosy and creative? Here are our 6 ideas for a creative October…
6 ideas for a creative October
1. Decorate mini pumpkins. You can’t scroll for two seconds without seeing a styled pumpkin on social media in October, but forget the mess of carving and join in the fun by simply decorating some instead. Mini pumpkins are very cute as they are but, for a creative spin, use acrylic paints, decoupage paper/fabric, or gold foil flakes, to make them extra special.
2. Make a spiced syrup. Did you know, using a saucepan over a medium heat, you can infuse sugar and water with yummy autumn flavours, reducing it down to a tasty syrup. Perfect for stirring into coffee or hot chocolate, or for drizzling over porridge or pancakes. Yum! Great spice options include cinnamon, cloves, or ginger; or, if you fancy something with a citrus kick, try orange peel.
3. Upcycle old knitwear. Got an old or holey jumper or scarf hiding in the back of your wardrobe? Give it a new lease of life this autumn by upcycling and repurposing it into something you’ll love to use. Mittens, a hot water bottle cover, draught excluder, mug cosy, slipper socks… let your imagination run wild and turn something tired into something creative.
4. Make an autumn wreath. Give your home a metaphorical hug by making an autumn wreath for your front door. You can forage for some bits in your local area (just check you’re allowed!), or buy things from a florist. Use berries, dried grasses, twigs, and leaves… the more texture and colour, the better.
5. Create a clay garland. Cut autumn shapes (like acorns, leaves, and pine cones) from air-dry clay, then string them together as a decorative, seasonal garland. Leave them plain for a subtle and natural look, paint them for a splash of colour, or apply metallic foils for a touch of magic.
6. Sew some reusable hand warmers. Using a heat-safe fabric (like 100% cotton), stitch little pouches and fill with uncooked rice, wheat, barley, or linseed, to make reusable hand warmers. To use, just gently warm a pouch in the microwave (timing will vary depending on the size of the pouch and the strength of your microwave so err on the side of caution and start with a few seconds at a time… you can always put it back in for a few more if it’s not warm enough).
There we go, 6 ideas for a creative October. Hopefully at least one will spark your imagination and help you enjoy more creativity this month, especially as it gets colder outside and the nights draw in.
Next month (November 2025) will be FCS’s first birthday, which means we’ve shared a whole year of Monthly Motivation posts so far. Where did that time go? To shake things up and give you more ideas, this will be the last Monthly Motivation blog with this format. From next month, there will be an exciting change – so watch this space.
